Talons's Garcia Named Week 6 National Guard Community MVP

April 13, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release

CHICAGO - San Antonio Talons QB AARON GARCIA has been named National Guard Community MVP of the Week for his recent philanthropic efforts.

Garcia (6-1, 195, Sacramento State) has returned for his 17th season and first with the Talons. Last season Garcia was voted the Russell Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Jacksonville Sharks to an ArenaBowl XXIV victory.

Garcia has spent time volunteering with the Wounded Warrior Project in San Antonio.

Recently, Garcia and his teammates visited a Wounded Warriors facility, where they met with service members.

"We are trying to develop a relationship and let them know how much we appreciate what they do and try to give something back," Garcia said. "There is a big military community here in San Antonio and so we think it's a relationship we can build on."

One particular service member, Kevin Summerlin made an impression on Garcia. Summerlin had suffered major injuries in both of his legs.

"With my long career in Arena Football, I've had what I thought were severe injuries. I've had to deal with them but to be able to talk to this gentleman and to see his perspective was great," Garcia said. "I went to the facility trying to help lift his spirits and let him know how much we appreciated him, but I was actually inspired by what he has done."

With San Antonio being a new AFL market, Garcia is excited to develop a strong relationship with the community.

"I'm still getting acclimated and in tune with the city of San Antonio and there's a lot more that I want to do personally as far as getting out there," Garcia said. "We want to show this community that we're not just out there to play football but to try and be a part of the success of this city as a whole." The San Antonio Talons (2-2) face the New Orleans VooDoo (2-2) in Week 6 tonight at 8:00 pm ET on "NET10 Arena Football Friday" on NFL Network.

The National Guard Community MVP is awarded to one player each week to recognize their commitment to community service. Following the 2012 season, players will be voted on by fans to become the National Guard Community MVP of the Year.
