Bakersfield Blitz News Release
TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa Talons (6-2) fought back from a first half deficit to score 36 second half points en route to a 56-43 victory over the Bakersfield Blitz (3-5) on Saturday night from the Tulsa Convention Center. The Talons are the only team to put up more than 40 points against the Blitz, and they did it in both meetings this season.
Bakersfield's defense warmed up the attack on Tulsa's first possession of the game. Alex Wallace nabbed his team-leading sixth interception in the end zone early. On the ensuing possession, QB Jason Thomas hooked up with Blitz FB Jabari Jackson, who rumbled 28 yards down the field for the 7-0 lead. The Blitz added to the lead on their next possession after taking over on downs to make it 13-0 on Rennard Reynolds' sixth TD grab. On the final play of the first quarter Aleric Clark ran back a kickoff 55 yards to put Tulsa on the board.
On the first drive of the second quarter, the Blitz got another touchdown catch from Reynolds to make it 20-7. After another Tulsa touchdown, a 35-yarder by Dan Burnett made it 23-14 in favor of Bakersfield. The Blitz had Tulsa pinned in their own end of the field late in the quarter, but couldn't hold the Talons off the board, as Donovan Morgan picked up an eight- yard touchdown grab to make it 23-21 Bakersfield at the half.
Tulsa took their first lead of the game on the first possession of the second half. Robert Reed took a hand off to the house to make it 28-23 Talons. After shutting down the Blitz on the ensuing possession, Tulsa extended the lead. Donovan Morgan caught his 29th touchdown pass of the season to make it 35- 23. Bakersfield pulled close with a 15-yard TD catch by Nathan Munson to make it 35-30, but a pair of interceptions got the Talons lead back to 12 at the end of the third quarter. Wallace added his second touchdown of the game for Bakersfield and seventh of the season to earn ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors.
In the fourth, a second interception by Tulsa erased Bakersfield's comeback hopes. Toby Moeves picked off Thomas midway through the final period and led to the seventh score of the game for the Talons. Both teams added two late scores, including Reynolds' third touchdown catch of the game, and the Talons took the two-game sweep.
Next weekend the Blitz head to San Diego for their third meeting of the season against the Riptide. Bakersfield is 2-0 against the Riptide on the season. They return home to host the Arkansas Twisters on Friday, June 10th.
