Talons Seize Top Spot in Power Rankings
July 9, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release
CHICAGO - The San Antonio Talons (13-3) clinched the Central Division championship and claimed the top spot in the Week 19 AFL Power Rankings following a 61-54 victory over the Chicago Rush (9-7) in Week 18. The win was the Talons' 10th consecutive victory. A win over the Arizona Rattlers (12-4) in Week 19 would give San Antonio home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Philadelphia Soul (14-3) handed the Spokane Shock (8-8) a 62-48 loss in Week 18 to move up one spot in the AFL Power Rankings. With the win, the Soul set the franchise record for most regular season victories. Philadelphia wrapped up home field advantage throughout the playoffs in Week 15 and will have a Week 19 bye to prepare for the Utah Blaze (11-5).
The Blaze captured a 62-49 win over the Rattlers in the "Snake Pit" to keep hope alive for a West Division title. Utah clinched a playoff berth in Week 18 and host the Cleveland Gladiators (7-9) in Week 19 on NFL Network's broadcast of "NET10 Arena Football Friday". A loss would knock the Gladiators out of postseason contention.
Arizona fell to the fourth spot of the AFL Power Rankings after the Week 18 loss to Utah. The Rattlers still remain atop the West Division, but will need to win out to clinch the title. The team travels to San Antonio on Saturday, July 14 for a showdown with the top-ranked Talons. Arizona was the last team to defeat San Antonio, handing the Talons a 34-point loss on April 22.
The San Jose SaberCats remained at number five after defeating the New Orleans VooDoo (8-8), 55-31, in Week 18. The win eliminated Spokane from playoff contention. When the Chicago Rush fell to the San Antonio Talons, San Jose and Utah both clinched playoff berths. San Jose has a bye in Week 19 and will host the Iowa Barnstormers (6-10) in the final week of the regular season.
The AFL Power Rankings are calculated on AFLFieldPass.com using vPower(tm), a scoring system based on winning percentage, strength of schedule, scoring percentage, and win-streak. The scale is normalized from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest).
