Talons Announce Assignment of Former Columbus WR/DB
July 29, 2003 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Tulsa Talons News Release
Tulsa, OK- The Tulsa Talons of the arenafootball2 League have been assigned Wide Receiver/Defensive Back Adrian Cockfield by the league office, Head Coach Skip Foster announced today.
"We're real excited about adding Adrian to our team," said Foster. "He's can play on both sides of the ball and I feel he can come in and learn the game quickly. He's a young player that has a lot of potential.
Cockfield (5-10, 180) played two seasons at Albany State University in Albany, Ga., in 2001 and 2002. He was the second-leading receiver for the Golden Rams as a senior with 35 receptions for 522 yards and two touchdowns. He also registered four punt-returns for 107 yards.
Cockfield comes to the Talons after appearing in 13 contests this season with the Columbus Wardogs. He became the Wardogs' primary receiving threat after James Dickerson suffered a season-ending knee injury with five games left in the season. He averaged eight catches-per-game during that span.
This season, Cockfield led the Wardogs with 77 pass receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns. He was also second on the team in all-purpose yards (1,156 total, 88.9 per game) while averaging 20.6 yards on 21 kickoff-returns. Five of those returns went for 30 or more yards.
"We're going to give him an opportunity to get in the mix with our guys," said Foster. "We're in a situation at receiver where we feel like we've got five quality players who can help him get acclimated to the team. So there' s not going to be a lot of pressure on him to have to come in and make an immediate impact.
Cockfield began the season in fine fashion with a game-winning touchdown catch in the closing seconds against the Memphis Xplorers.
The second-seeded Talons have a first-round buy and the week off as they await their second round opponent in the af2 playoffs. Tulsa could be looking at a possible re-match with the Hawaiian Islanders if the Islanders can knock off the Wichita Stealth this Friday. However, if the Stealth can pull off a victory on the road, the Talons would face the winner of the Bakersfield Blitz/Arkansas Twisters match-up, which is scheduled for Saturday.
Tickets for the Talons' second-round playoff game on Saturday, August 9th, are available at local Drug Marts, the Tulsa Convention Center Box Office, the Talons ticket office or by phone at 584-2000.
