Colorado Gold Kings News Release
Colorado Springs, CO -Marty Flichel scored twice in the second period and David Goverde turned in 39 saves as the Tacoma Sabercats forced a fifth and deciding Game Five with a 2-1 victory over Colorado Tuesday night World Arena.
The Gold Kings scored the game's first goal for the fourth straight time in the series at 13:22 of the opening period as Ryan Tocher beat Goverde on a breakaway with a backhander through the five-hole. But Goverde shut Colorado down from that point on, and poor defensive zone play and ill-timed penalties conspired to doom the Gold Kings in the second period. Clayton Read intercepted a Mike Nicholishen pass and quickly fed Flichel to tie the game at 1-1 six minutes into the frame. Then, late in the period, Aaron Boh was called for tripping and Colorado was guilty of too many men on the ice, leading to a five-on-three power play, which Flichel promptly converted with 53 seconds left on the clock. The Gold Kings outshot the Sabercats 40-33, but Goverde turned away all 19 shots he faced in the third period to preserve the win.
The Gold Kings, who defeated the Sabercats in a winner-take-all Game Five in the first round last year, will attempt to do the same tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at the Colorado Springs World Arena. Jack Michaels calls the play-by-play for Colorado's games, all of which are broadcast live on KKCS-AM Hot Talk 1460.
