T-Bones Take Playoff Opener, 2-0, Behind Bicknell Shutout

September 7, 2004 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Sporting Kansas City News Release

Greg Bicknell (W) outdueled Schaumburg ace Hank Woodman (L), going the distance while throwing just 100 pitches in a 2-0 Kansas City T-Bones win in the opener of the South Division Championship Series. The T-Bones now lead the best-three-of-five series 1-0.

Kansas City was hitless until the fifth inning against Woodman, when Mike Brown singled to lead things off. Brown advanced to second on a Phil Thompson bunt, and then Matt Ceriani walked. After a Jack Jones ground out advanced runners to second and third, Rick Prieto singled in two with two outs for the only runs of the game.

Schaumburg threatened early, with Geoff McCallum walking to lead off the bottom of the first. While McCallum would advance to third, Bicknell struck out the side, the first three of nine whiffs in the game. Bicknell would allow just one runner to advance to second the rest of the night, using double plays to get out of two innings.

Woodman was dominant, striking out twelve, but his solid effort wasn't enough to do in the T-Bones, who send righty Jonathan Krysa (9-7, 3.10) against Schaumburg righty Matt Bailie (9-5, 5.03) in a 12:05 PM game at Alexian Field. As with all T-Bones games, this one will be carried live on All Comedy Radio 1340 KCKN and www.tbonesbaseball.com.
