Syracuse Named First 2010 Aba Expansion Team

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) announced today that Syracuse NY is the first ABA expansion team set for play in 2010. "We are especially pleased and proud to announce this team," stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. "Originally, we thought the team would be playing next season. However, the owner, Charles "Chuck" Iavarone, was recalled by the US Army in 2008 to serve for the 39th Military Police Company from Minden LA and is in a combat tour in Iraq where he is serving as part of the Army's Police Transition team. Chuck anticipates his return to the US in September. We hope that he returns safely. We are very proud to have him as part of the ABA."
A 2001 graduate of Cicero-North Syracuse High School, Chuck attended Canisius College before enlisting in the US Army Reserve as a Military Police Specialist. He was mobilized in 2003 to conduct Law Enforcement Operations at Fort Drum NY where he received the Army Commendation Medal for aiding in the rescue of two soldiers injured during a helicopter crash. While serving in the Army Reserve, he served a two year term as Town Supervisor of Salina NY. "Owning a professional sports team has been a dream of mine," stated Iavarone. "I cannot wait until I return home and get started. Meantime, thanks to the internet, we follow the ABA closely on all of the different web sites and we receive all of the bulletins from the league. We've already named our team the Syracuse ShockWave and have several people putting things together at home while I'm away."
