Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
The Wildcats' Alaskan swing got off to an inauspicious start as they dropped a pair of games to the Kenai River Brown Bears, 9-3 Friday and 5-2 Saturday.
The Brown Bears ripped off six goals in a row in the opening 30 minutes en route to a 9-3 victory on Friday. Lucas Kohls and Brad LeLievre each had two before Charlie Hemstrom got the Wildcats on the board, assisted by Marshall Tema on the power play during a four-minute double minor. The Brown Bears regained their six-goal cushion less than a minute later with a shorthanded tally before Will Vosejpka added another power play goal late in the period, assisted by Erik Ouellette and Ben Kucera . Ryan Dau added a goal in mop-up time, aided by Hemstrom.
A pair of second-period goals by Kenai River turned out to be the difference makers in a 5-2 Wildcats' loss on Saturday. Newcomer Conor O'Neil, acquired earlier in the week from Amarillo, got the Wildcats on the board eight minutes in, assisted by Tyler Ledford, but the Brown Bears got the next three in their favor before Colin Staub made it a 3-2 game early in the third period off Hemstrom's third assist in as many games. The early goal did little for momentum though as the Brown Bears got an unassisted goal from Matt Seidel five minutes later and added an empty-netter late. The Wildcats outshot the Brown Bears 17-8 in the third period, but goalie Gustaf Johansson came up with 16 saves.
NOTES : Neither Patrick Yudez nor Oliver Janzen played due to injuries... Cooper Cook and Eliot Grauer each served suspensions Friday but were back in the lineup on Saturday... Scott Douglas, victim of the aforementioned hit that caused the double-minor on Friday, missed Saturday's game. He is out indefinitely due to a concussion... In addition to O'Neil, the Wildcats also acquired defenseman Bryan McFarlane from Minot in the past week. McFarlane, a 6'2" 180 pound native of Arizona had no points, 5 penalty minutes, and an even plus-minus ratio in his Wildcats' debut on Saturday. O'Neil is wearing #11, and McFarlane #3.
