LAST TIME OUT
MOOSIC, PA (August 22, 2026) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Charlotte Knights 9-6 Saturday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders erased a four-run deficit, but the Knights' bats were too much for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to secure its third victory in a row against Charlotte.
The Knights opened the offense with a four-run second frame. Ryan Galanie tripled to lead off and scored on a Caden Connor base hit for a 1-0 edge. After Dru Baker reached on a fielder's choice, Andy Weber hit a three-run homer to right to give Charlotte a 4-0 advantage.
The RailRiders sent all nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to capture the lead. Yanquiel Fernández took Charlotte starter David Sandlin deep with a 437-foot bomb over the center field wall to close within three. Ernesto Martinez Jr. walked, Duke Ellis singled, and Anthony Volpe reached on an error before Jasson Domínguez singled home a pair to cut the deficit to one. With the bases loaded and no one out, J.C. Escarra's two-run base knock gave SWB a 5-4 lead.
Charlotte's Michael Turner tied the game at five in the top of the fifth with an RBI double that plated Mario Camilletti from first. RailRiders reliever Hayden Merda issued a bases-loaded walk, giving the Knights their second lead of the night, and Galanie's RBI groundout extended the advantage. In the sixth, Rikuu Nishida tripled to score Weber and crossed on a Camilletti single to pull ahead 9-5.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but could not cut into the four-run Charlotte lead until the bottom of the ninth when Mitch Garver singled home Duke Ellis from second to cap the scoring. Ellis stole his 45th base of the season in the bottom of the ninth to set Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's single-season franchise record set by Tommy Barrett in 1989.
Sandlin (2-0) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits on five runs, walking and striking out four. Eric Reyzelman (1-3) tossed 1.1 frames, allowing three runs on two hits in the loss. Carson Coleman got the start for SWB, surrendering three runs on three hits over 1.1 innings of work.
NEWS AND NOTES
IN THE LEAGUE - After a loss yesterday, the RailRiders are in fifth place in the International League. They are now two games behind the leading Durham with Indianapolis, St. Paul, and Rochester in between. The RailRiders are 3-7 in their last ten games, are seven contests above .500 on the full season. Charlotte is six games out of first place and have gone 4-6 in their last ten contests.
DUKE'S RECORD PERFORMANCE - Duke Ellis set a new single season record with 45 stolen bases on the season. He broke the record of 44 set by Tommy Barrett in 1989. Barrett did so in 120 games, whereas Ellis marked his in 85 contests. Ellis also holds the franchise record for 87 total with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 161 games. The prior record was held by Nick Punto who stole 82 bags in 263 games. Ellis's personal record is 57 in a single year done back in 2024.
TRAVIS'S TURN - Travis MacGregor will make the spot start for the RailRiders today in just his third appearance with SWB. MacGregor was a starter in his first few seasons of professional baseball, but transitioned to the bullpen for the 2022 season. MacGregor had four rehab assignments between Tampa and Hudson Valley after being returning from the Injured List on August 7. The 28-year-old was signed by a minor league free agent contract on December 12.
YANQUIEL GOES YARD - Yanquiel Fernández leads the RailRiders in home runs with 21 and in runs batted in with 70 after another long ball last night. The homers are tied for eighth most in the International League while the RBIs are fifth most. The 23-year-old has upped his batting average to .257 after a good month of August. Fernández was claimed off of waivers by the Yankees from Colorado in January and then was designated for assignment a few days later but was able to be outrighted to SWB.
ELI'S ENERGY- SWB welcomed relief pitcher Eli Morgan to the team yesterday and he made his first appearance that night. He pitched two clean innings of work on 30 pitches with a pair of strikeouts. Morgan joins the team from the Kansas City organization where he was playing in Triple-A Omaha. With the Storm Chasers, the righty held a 1.40 ERA in 25.2 frames. With the Royals, he made 16 appearances for a 5.12 ERA.
BABY BOMBER SUNDAY - The RailRiders dress as the Baby Bombers every Sunday. They are 4-1 in this alternate identity with the only loss taken in a rare Thursday in the jerseys because of a replica jersey giveaway.
WHAT'S LEFT - The RailRiders have just four weeks of the season left after Sunday, with two of those series here at PNC Field. They will play travel to Worcester next week to finish off August. September features a home series against Lehigh Valley and a trip to Rochester where they will play on Labor Day Monday. SWB wraps up their 2026 campaign with a week at PNC Field against Jacksonville, the Marlins Triple-A affiliate.
