July 6, 2011 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release
LAKE CHARLES LA. - The Louisiana Swashbucklers spent the Independence Day holiday weekend in Albany, Georgia going for a fourth championship in team history but it would be the Panthers who celebrated with a victory. The Bucs fell to the Panthers 69-48 in a game that saw Albany's defense contain quarterback Sammy Knight and his receivers.
In a game that saw Albany quarterback Cecil Lester throw 10 touchdown passes and more than 300 yards the Bucs defense was put to the test. Lester's offense scored 48 second half points though trailing 27-21 at halftime. The original score at intermission was 27-24 but the officials took away three points from Albany due to a confusing rule involving dropkick points after. Louisiana did make the game competitive. Lester was intercepted on a pass near the end of the first half and the turnover resulted in a score for the Bucs. The Purple-And-Black gang managed to score on every series in the first half of the game but got nothing out of their first two possessions of the second half.
Albany's defense held the Swashbucklers to 21 second half points while the Panthers offense scored 48. Though the Bucs played with determination and intensity Albany found the breaks and it worked to their advantage. The Panthers ended the season at 13-2 while Louisiana has a 10-5 record for 2011. When asked about how it felt to win the SIFL championship for the first time, head coach Lucious Davis said, "This is a great accomplishment for the Panthers. A lot of work and effort came from everyone involved. From the front office staff to the coaches and players, this win belongs to the team, our fans and the City of Albany."
Coach Davis also said he will return next year along with the coaching staff. The Albany Panthers is owned by Rod Chappell and Will Carter is the general manager. Of the Swashbucklers, Coach Davis said: "I have a lot of respect for Coach (Darnell) Lee. He has guided his team to winning seasons and the playoffs. I am certain the Swashbucklers will be a contender again next season."
The Swashbucklers will go into the off-season working on preparations for the 2012 campaign, which will be the eighth in team history.
