PORTLAND, January 3, 2009 - Playing their first game in the revamped West Division, the Minnesota Swarm beat the Portland LumberJax 11-7 in front of 7,121 at the Rose Garden Arena Saturday night. Forward Peter Morgan scored two goals and forward Cory Conway added three assists for the Jax.

Portland kicked things off with 12:17 left in the first quarter as forward Peter Jacobs (1 goal, 1 assist) scored off a series of passes from Conway and forward Derek Malawsky (2 assists). Then P. Morgan scored with 9:29 left after he cleaned up a Conway rebound to make it 2-0.

Forward Scott Stewart (1 goal, 1 assist) got into the act with 4:28 left in the quarter as the British Columbia native fired a missile past Swarm goalie Nick Patterson to make it 3-0. The Swarm would score a goal before rookie forward Tim Campeau scored off Pat Jones' face-off win to make it 4-1 with 39.6 seconds left in the first quarter.

Swarm forward Sean Pollock would later score the final goal of the quarter with 1.2 seconds left to cut the Jax lead to 4-2 at the end of one.

Portland pushed the lead back to three after P. Morgan went the length of the floor and beat Patterson to make it 5-2 with 12:04 left in the second quarter.

However, the Swarm would hit their own hot streak, scoring four straight goals to take their first lead of the game at 6-5 into the break.

Minnesota's scoring surged continued into the second half as the Swarm scored the first goal to take a 7-5 lead. Down two, Portland began its comeback. Forward Dan Stroup scored off passes from Brodie Merrill and goalie Matt Disher (32 saves) with 12:27 left in the third to cut the Swarm lead to 7-6.

Once again, Minnesota had an answer as the Swarm scored with 10:46 left to take an 8-6 lead into the final quarter of regulation.

Like the previous quarter, the Swarm opened the quarter with a goal as forward Ryan Ward scored with 14:35 left to push the Minnesota lead to 9-6.

The Swarm would add two more goals and Portland would get another goal from Stroup as Minnesota left the Rose City victorious.

Notes: Portland fell to 2-2 all-time in home openers.
