Forest City Owls News Release
Fayetteville, NC- The Fayetteville SwampDogs led the Coastal Plain League in stolen bases and attempts this year. For the first 11 innings, the Forest City Owls kept the running game in check. In the 12th, the speed made all the difference. After a leadoff single, Mike Tauchman stole second and third base against pitcher Champ Rowland. Tauchman then came in to score on a passed ball by Will Chandler, giving the SwampDogs a 2-1 victory in 12 innings.
It's just the second loss for the Owls this postseason. Both of them have come in extra innings, on a walk-off passed ball to score the winning run in extra frames. The first one was in Game 1 of Forest City's first-round series against the Asheboro Copperheads. Fayetteville's win tonight forces a Game 3 tomorrow night at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville at 7:05 PM. The winner will advance to the Petitt Cup Finals to take on the Columbia Blowfish.
The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning. Bryan Aanderud started the frame with a walk, but was quickly erased on a fielder's choice ground ball from Nate Chong. The Forest City centerfielder moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Then, Alex Close hit a ball through the right side. Chong raced around third and slid around a tag by the catcher Jacob Golliday even though the throw beat him to the plate.
After a slow start, the SwampDogs offense finally came to life in the bottom of the 6th inning. Ryan Hander held them scoreless through the first five innings, but Hunter Privette allowed back-to-back doubles by Reed Harper and Sal Giardina that tied the game at 1-1.
