SwampDogs Sign Two Panthers

April 26, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs have added some killer instinct to the team with the signing of two Eastern Illinois Panthers.

Sophomore catcher Hunter Morris and freshman infielder Nick Maton will suit up for the SwampDogs this summer and help in the quest for the Petitt Cup.

Morris, a Paris, Ill. native, has seen increased action in 2016 for the Panthers by displaying good power, with a pair of home runs and four extra base hits. Morris will provide depth behind the plate, where he nabs over 30% of attempted base stealers. As a senior at Paris High School, Morris was bestowed with first-team All-State honors.

Maton, a Chatham, Ill. native, was a decorated player at Glenwood High School and has earned significant playing time as a freshman. Maton has started in 35 games this season, posting a .257 average with 11 extra base hits. At 6-2, 165, coaches expect him to fill out and display even more of his raw talent. Maton was a two-time All-Central State Eight conference selection, was the Central State Eight Player of the Year his senior year, and garnered first-team All-State honors his senior year as well.

The Eastern Illinois Panthers are coached by Major League Baseball alum Jason Anderson, who enters his first season as the head coach of the program. One of his assistant coaches, Blake Beemer, played with the SwampDogs in 2012 while a student at Ball State University and had the distinction of playing for the team while simultaneously being an intern for the front office. Eastern Illinois University is located in Charleston, Ill. and competes in the Ohio Valley Conference in N.C.A.A. Division I.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs home opener for the 2016 season is Wednesday, June 1st . Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 910-426-5900, or by visiting www.goswampdogs.com/tickets.
