SwampDogs Score Another Victory

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs won another exciting matchup against the Morehead City Marlins, this one by the score of 4-2, as they have won their first two games of the season.
Things were going the SwampDogs way early on, as Rayne Raven shut down the Marlins' offense, not allowing a hit through the first 5.2 innings.
On the offensive side, things got going for the Dogs in the second inning when first baseman Lane Paul drew a leadoff walk. Designated hitter Palmer Page and David LaFleur followed that up with consecutive singles and the bases were loaded with nobody out.
Left fielder Brandon Metoyer brought Paul in with a sacrifice fly, but that was the only run the Dogs would get in and they led 1-0.
They would strike again in the fourth when Metoyer would get his second RBI of the game, driving in Page who walked to lead off the inning.
But the story of the game was Raven. He was in complete control of his two-seam fastball from the beginning of the game until he exited, coaxing seven groundball outs from the Marlins. He also struck out seven and allowed one hit in his six innings of work.
The hit, though came at the wrong time, as after shortstop Devin Kirkpatrick was hit by a pitch and right fielder Matt Simmons walked, catcher Garrett McKinzie doubled down the left field line to plate them both, and the game was tied at 2.
The SwampDogs quickly regained the lead as catcher Jacob Whiting reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch from Jordan Knutson. Then after a pitching change, he advanced to third on a Kam Stewart groundout and came into score on a wild pitch from Matt Tindall.
Third baseman Jake Caron scored on another wild pitch from Tindall later in the inning to make it 4-2 SwampDogs.
Teddy Turner came into relieve Raven, making his second appearance in as many days, and pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Deshorn Lake made his first appearance of the season in the ninth and shut the door on the Marlins, securing the victory for the SwampDogs by striking out the side.
Raven was the winning pitcher, and is now 1-0 on the year. Scott Edge took the loss for the Marlins, and is now 0-1. Lake's save was his first of the season.
The SwampDogs return home Thursday night to host the Edenton Steamers at J.P. Riddle Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 pm, for tickets call the SwampDogs at 426-5900.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had nearly 1,200 alumni drafted and 68 of those - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
