March 14, 2017 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

Fayetteville, N.C. -The Fayetteville SwampDogs have announced the signing of East Tennessee State University junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Simpler (Lewes, Del.) to the 2017 pitching staff.

In 2016, Simpler appeared in 27 total games while making five starts on the mound. He pitched the second-most innings on the staff (62.2) and struck out 72 batters in his sophomore campaign. He averaged a team-best 1.6 strikeouts per inning and posted an opposing batting average of .261.

Simpler is no stranger to summer baseball. His 2016 summer season was spent with the Pittsfield Suns (MA) where he saw action in 10 games with six starts. Over 49.2 innings, Simpler fanned 45 batters while only allowing 11 free passes, with a 3.26 ERA.

During his freshman season with the Buccaneers, Simpler threw 55 strikeouts in 61.1 innings pitched. He played in a total of 20 contests with nine starts on the bump and tallied a second-best 2.75 strikeout to walk ratio. He struck out at least one batter in 19 out of his 20 appearances and did not surrender an earned run in six of them.

"Ryan has very good strikeout stuff and had a lot of success this past summer," said SwampDogs head coach Matt Hollod. "He is looking to play a key role this spring as one of the teams weekend starters. His role with us will be determined after the spring season, but he will be able to help us as either a starter or reliever."

Be sure to stay tuned during the remainder of the off-season as we continue to periodically announce our new members of the 2017 Fayetteville SwampDogs!
