SwampDogs Nipped by Steamers in Extras

August 7, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

The fourth seeded Fayetteville SwampDogs dropped game one of the three game series 4-2 in 12 innings against the top ranked Edenton Steamers.

Kevin Archbold (Albany) had another terrific start, pitching six innings of one-run baseball and striking out eight Steamers en route to a no decision.

This game was certainly a wild one and the Steamers nearly cost themselves the game due to poor base running.

Fayetteville struck first in the third inning when Mitchell Kranson (California) walked and eventually reached home on a throwing error by third baseman Josh Hampton (Wilmington). Edenton would tie it in the next half frame after Tyler Qualls (Louisiana Tech) hit an RBI groundout to second base.

In the top of the sixth, the Steamers were threatening with runners on second and third with no outs and the SwampDogs infield playing in. Ryan Busch (Georgetown) snagged a hard hit ball to second, checked the runner at third, and got the out at first. Kranson threw back door to the runner at second base and the Dogs eventually got the potential go ahead run out in a pickle between third and home.

In the bottom half of the inning, Kranson led off with his second double of the game, but Ransom LaLonde (St. Edward's) could not capitalize on a sacrifice bunt situation as pitcher John Williams (George Mason) gunned down Kranson at third.

Brian Celsi (California) drove a single into left field and Derek Gibson (Southeast Missouri) would take the lead 2-1 with an RBI double to left-center field.

In the top of the eighth, Edenton would answer. After Chase Harris (New Mexico) and Hampton reached back with back-to-back singles, both runners advanced into scoring position after a poor relay from the outfield.

With a 1-1 count, Nick Miller (Northern Colorado) placed down a suicide squeeze bunt down the first base line to score Harris and tie the game at two and eventually force the game to extras.

Cody Dix (Francis Marion) threw a perfect inning with two strikeouts and Travis Hissong (Wright State) allowed that suicide squeeze play in one of his three innings of relief. He allowed two hits, one run, and four strikeouts to bring his yearly total to a team-leading 43 after the night.

Jack Van Horn (Wright State) got himself in a jam in the 12th inning when he loaded the bases with no outs. Busch helped him snag one out, but Harris lined a two-RBI single over the head of LaLonde to score Tyler Eager (Abilene Christian) and Nick Thompson (East Carolina). Van Horn allowed just his second earned run of the summer.

Edenton and Fayetteville will play game two Thursday night in Edenton at 7:05 p.m. The Steamers are 22-2 at home this year and Fayetteville needs two straight wins on the road to advance to the Coastal Plain League Pettit Cup Playoff Semifinals.
