SwampDogs Lose Heartbreaker in Second Half Opener

Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Baseball may be the game with no clock, but that doesn't mean it can't be played quickly.

In a game that took less than two-and-a-half hours from start to finish, the SwampDogs began the second half of the season with a matchup on the road against the Wilmington Sharks. Despite stellar work on the mound and a late Fayetteville rally, the SwampDogs were unable to push many runs across the plate, coming up just short in a tough 2-1 loss.

The game was a pitchers' duel all the way to the end, with both teams getting seven strong innings from their starters. Fayetteville's Dillon Brown (Cal State Fullerton) showed off the same talent he flashed in the season's first half, allowing just one run on three hits and keeping Fayetteville within striking distance throughout the game.

The SwampDogs took advantage of Brown's performance in the eighth inning, using two of their four hits on the night to tie the game. Trailing 1-0, Zachary Jacobs (Charleston Southern) led off with a single and was replaced on the basepaths by Willis McDaniel (Florida A&M). Three batters later, with McDaniel having stolen second base, Brett Young (Delta State) drove him in with a single to center field. The SwampDogs were unable to hold off the Sharks in the bottom of the ninth, though, as Wilmington rebounded with a two-out RBI double to win the game.

Fayetteville is back in action Tuesday, hosting the Asheboro Copperheads for the 12th annual StriKing Out Cancer Night at The Swamp! The SwampDogs will be wearing one-of-a-kind pink jerseys, each of which will be auctioned off to raise money for the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, before setting up Independence Day with the biggest fireworks extravaganza of the year!
