FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The SwampDogs (12-8) are back to their winning ways again after topping the East Division leading Peninsula Pilots (12-7) at The Swamp by a score of 8-6.
Justin Hawkins (Clemson) made his return to the SwampDogs line-up and his impact was immediately felt as the shortstop singled in Jameel Edney (Bethune Cookman) to increase the SwampDogs lead to 2-0 following an RBI single from Mike Farnell (Murray State) that also saw Juwan Burney score on an error (Delta State), which started the scoring between the East Division's top two teams.
The Pilots would glide to the lead in the 5th only to see the Fayetteville's offensive explode for 4 runs in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-5 lead. Austin Edgette added to his team-high 12 RBIs with two more plated by the centerfielder. Farnell, Hawkins, Jay Robinson (New Orleans), Edney would all score in the inning.
The SwampDogs would tack on another run in the 7th thank to an RBI single from Robinson, bringing Justin Hawkins home to score for the second time on the night.
The SwampDogs would get another solid outing from Nick Ernst (2-1) (Miami OH) as the reigning CPL Pitcher of the Week would hold the high-powered Peninsula offense to just 4 runs in his 5 innings of work.
With the win the Dogs moved within a half-game of the Pilots for first place in the East Division, setting up a pivotal two game road trip to Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday next week.
