SwampDogs Drop Opener in Florence, 6-1

Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FLORENCE, S.C. - Lighting, rain, and left-handers stymied the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a 6-1 loss to the Florence RedWolves in the season opener.
Lightning strikes and consistent rain pushed the start of the game back one hour and fifteen minutes before Florence starter Michael Maiocco dampened the SwampDog bats for six innings.
SwampDogs' third basemen Patrick Donnelly had very little trouble figuring out the southpaw, going 3-3 with a double on just three pitches against Maiocco.
But the Florence offense scrapped together timely hits to build an early lead. Center fielder and lead off hitter Reece Hampton reached in his first three at bats for the RedWolves and stole two bases while catcher Nathan Wierzgac drove in three.
The SwampDogs lone run came in the sixth inning as Tyler Tharp and Donnelly each singled. After moving into scoring position, a wild pitch from Maiocco brought Tharp home.
The SwampDogs bullpen of Zack Martinelli and Nick Yobbi combined for three scoreless innings of relief after the run but Florence's combo of Colton Lamb and Kyle Anderson answered the challenge with three zeroes of their own to seal the game in favor of the RedWolves.
The SwampDogs fall to 0-1 on the year as lefty Peter Moore is hung with the loss.
Maiocco and the RedWolves both begin the season 1-0.
The Fayetteville SwampDogs home opener for the 2016 season is Wednesday, June 1st .
