Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

WILSON, N.C. - Balls were flying at Historic Fleming Stadium and the SwampDogs belted their first homerun of the season, albeit in a losing effort as the Tobs defeated the "˜Dogs 8-4 Saturday night.

In the top of the second inning, right fielder Norm Donkin connected with a John Valek offering, and deposited it over the wall in left centerfield. Later in the inning, first baseman David Palenzuela made a bid for a homerun of his own, hitting a shot to the warning track in right center that found the glove of Tob right fielder Ben Schmucker.

In the third inning, things got off to a fast start for the SwampDogs when catcher Jacob Whiting smoked a two-base hit to left center. Then with one out, second baseman Jason Blum walked, then shortstop Kam Stewart slammed a double off the top of the wall in left center, bringing home Whiting and Blum. Donkin would single to bring home Stewart and the SwampDogs had a 4-2 lead.

But the Tobs would strike back immediately with three runs in the bottom half of the third, plating three runs of their own off of SwampDogs starter Clayton Freimuth, taking a 5-4 lead and chasing Freimuth from the game.

Teddy Turner would come in for long relief and pitched 2.2 innings, surrendering two runs, though only one was earned. Seth Laigast would surrender the eighth and final Tob run in the sixth inning, and Hunter Barnett and Hasten Freeman would pitch scoreless seventh and eighth innings, respectively.

Freimuth was the losing pitcher, falling to 0-1, the winner was Valek, improving to 1-0. Each team now has a record of 6-4 good for second in the Coastal Plain League East Division.

The SwampDogs' next game is Monday night on the road against the Wilmington Sharks at The Shark Tank.
