
SwampDogs Announce 4th Annual Homerun Math Challenge Returns to Cumberland County Schools

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are proud to announce the 4th Annual Fun-Go's Homerun Math Challenge has returned to Cumberland County Elementary Schools for another year. This program was designed to help students in grades 2-5 prepare for end of grade math testing.
In partnership with our local Fazoli's, Jason's Deli, Monkey Joe's, Fascinate U Children's Museum and TCBY for the 2012 edition. Over 75,000 children have had the opportunity to take part in this program over the last three years. In addition to the extra preparation for their testing, each participant is eligible to receive a prize at each "base" as they round the field with their successes in math. When a student reaches a base, they will receive a prize courtesy of Fazoli's, Miami Subs, Jason's Deli, Monkey Joe's or the Fayetteville SwampDogs.
Each teacher will set the parameters for their classroom to ensure each participant gets the opportunity to be their best. This program revolves around math problems relating to baseball, making math fun!
"Cumberland County Schools is excited to partner with the Fayetteville SwampDogs to provide a mathematics incentive program for our elementary students," said Dawne Coker, Curriculum Specialist, K-5 for Mathematics. "This program motivates students to persevere at solving rigorous math problems and sparks excitement about mathematics."
"We're extremely excited to continue this program with the schools," said SwampDogs operations manager Mark Wilderman. "As a parent, I feel this is a special chance for kids to focus on improving their math skills while making learning fun!"
The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, entering their 12th season in the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players a chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had more than 930 alums drafted and 48 alums "" including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their major league debut thus far.
