Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwamDogs (30-20) and Holly Springs Salamanders (23-26) combined for 32 runs on 40 hits with the visitors getting the better of their hosts by a score of 18-14 as Fayetteville dropped their second straight game.
The SwampDogs spotted the Salamanders a 4-0 following holly Springs' first at-bats, but the SwampDogs wouldn't exit the opening inning without some runs of their own plating two in the first on a groundout into a double-play from Jayson Newman (Cal State Northridge) that scored Austin Edgette (Bloomsburg) followed by a double from reigning CPL Hitter of the Week Justin Hawkins (Clemson) that plated Andrew Henrickson (East Carolina) to cut the deficit in half at 4-2 after one inning.
After the Salamanders plated their 5th run in the second inning, Newman drove his 8th home run of the season over the centerfield wall to pull the SwampDogs back within two at 5-3.
The Salamanders would never go down quietly though, plating 4 in the top of the 5th inning, before the SwampDogs would respond with 4 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but Holly Springs proved to be too much on Monday night adding three more runs in both the 6th and 7th innings to put Holly Springs ahead 15-8 heading into the 7th inning stretch.
Fayetteville would tack on 4 more in the 7th inning, but it was all for not as the Salamanders continued to pour it on with 3 more runs in the 8th to put the SwampDogs away by a final score of 18-14.
Brian Ricker (Mitchell College) was tagged with the loss dropping the lefty to (1-2) while Ryan Lefner (Saint Louis) took the victory improving to (2-3).
The SwampDogs return to the Swamp on Tuesday, August 1 for Swipe Right Night against the Morehead City Marlins. The gates will open at 6 with first pitch at 7:05.
