Surprise rally comes up short

Surprise Fightin' Falcons News Release

A big comeback went for naught at Surprise Stadium Saturday night as the Surprise FightinÂ’ Falcons rallied all the way back from a 7-0 deficit only to lose it in the ninth inning 10-8 against the Chico Outlaws.

Chico rallied to beat Surprise for the second straight night as the Outlaws scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth to avoid an embarrassing collapse. Chico burned Surprise starter James Beever Jr. for seven runs over the first three innings, and it appeared the game was out of reach for the Falcons. But Surprise rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead.

But the Outlaws broke open a tie game in the ninth with an RBI double by Eddie Guessford and a sacrifice fly from Derek Smith. Reliever Mike Gits set down the Falcons in order in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Chico (6-8) appeared to be headed for a rout early in the game as three of the first five batters doubled and six of the first eight hitters reached safely on hits, brining home four runs before the Falcons even came up to bat. The Outlaws added three more in the third on two RBI singles and a balk.

The Falcons then started chipping away at the deficit. C Greg Stevens hit a solo home run to start the fourth inning and the team rallied for four in the sixth – three coming on OF Billy Brown’s three-run homer to leftfield that made the score 7-4. Pinch-hitter Richard Quihuis-Bell made it a two-run game with an RBI double, and Surprise had a chance to add more in the inning, but OF Josh Green lined out to rightfield with the bases loaded and two outs.

3B Jay Yaconetti led off the eighth with a solo homer to make it a one-run game, then Quihuis-Bell, who stayed in to play first base, drove home the tying and go-ahead runs with a single.

Chico scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth to tie the score again before winning it in the ninth.

Surprise RHP Steve Rain, who has been moved to the bullpen, took the loss and fell to 0-3. ChicoÂ’s Ryan Tracey, who pitched a scoreless eight, got a win in his first decision of the year.
