Surge's winning streak ended

Mississippi Surge News Release

Two streaks came to an end in the Mississippi Surge's 2-0 loss to the Mississippi RiverKings Friday night in Southaven. The loss snapped the Surge's three game winning streak, and it also ended a run of six straight wins for the Surge against their in-state rivals from the northern tip of Mississippi.

An unusual seven minute power play in the first period provided the impetus the RiverKings' victory. When the RiverKings Kyle Lundale delivered a big hit on the Surge's Reid Edmondson, Anthony Collins quickly jumped in to come to the aid of his Surge teammate. The resulting penalty was a minor for instigating and a major for fighting assessed to Collins and the RiverKings had no penalties assessed, resulting in the rare seven minute power play.

Matt Whitehead supplied all the offense the RiverKings needed, scoring twice on that extended power play. He ripped a shot from the high slot that eluded Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley at 12:37. Whitehead finished off a nice passing play, scoring from the bottom of the right wing face-off circle just over four minutes later, at 16:38.

While Smiley didn't surrender another goal over the final 43 minutes, neither did his counterpart at the other end of the ice. David Wilson turned aside all 29 shots he faced, notching his thrid shutout of the season.

The Surge will visit Pensacola Saturday night and return home to the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Tuesday to host Louisiana at 7:05 p.m.
