Surge Opens Training Camp

Hit The Ice: The Mississippi Surge begins training camp for its third Southern Professional Hockey League season this week. The Surge won both the Coffey Trophy as regular season champs, and President's Cup trophy as playoff champions last season.

New Leader: Jeff Bes enters his first season as head coach of the Surge. Bes had a highly decorated playing career which included winning the World Junior Championship; won two Central Hockey League championships as a player with the Laredo Bucks; won two CHL MVP awards; and won one CHL Playoff MVP award.

Back Again: The Surge have six players on their training camp roster who played for the club last season. They are defenseman Nick Klaren and forwards Mark Versteeg- Lytwyn, Chris Chambers, Rob Campbell, Jeff Grant, and Brent Clarke.

Hit The Ice: After team physicals Monday, and initial team meeting and equipment and check in on Tuesday, the Surge will hit the ice for the first time on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, at the Gulf Coast Coliseum. There will be two on ice sessions Wednesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 4-6 p.m. each day.

Scrimmages: The Surge gets its first glimpse of SPHL competition in a pair of scrimmages against the Pensacola Ice Flyers on Friday and Saturday at 1 p.m. each day in Pensacola.
