Surge lose 4-1

The Mississippi Surge surrendered two late goals Saturday night quashing any hopes for a comeback against the Columbus Cottonmouths, and lost 4-1 in Columbus.

Matt Gingera scored both goals that dashed the Surge's rally attempt. He scored with just under four minutes left to give Columbus a 3-1 lead, then put the icing on the cake with the final goal coming with just 1:37 left to play.

Kevin Kessler opened the scoring for Columbus with the only goal of the first period coming at 11:57. Jordan Braid made it 2-0 on a power play, with the only goal of the second period, with eight minutes left to play.

Adam Stuart set the stage for a dramatic third period, getting the Surge's only goal, just 51 seconds into the period. The intensity picked up throughout the period. Tempers boiled over with 1:05 left to play when the Surge's Kyle VanderMale squared off with Corey Bellamy. At the same stoppage, Mississippi's Matt Ridley and Daniel Amesbury also fought. Another fight erupted jst after the final buzzer between the Surge's Brandon Kosolofsky and Columbus' Will Aide, who was assessed a game misconduct penalty for leaving the players' bench. For the game, the teams combined for 98 penalty minutes.

The Surge will be taking part in the Blue on Black soccer event presented by the Chris Driebergen Foundation Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Sports Pavilion in Gautier. The next game will be Friday at home against the Mississippi RiverKings at 7:05 p.m. That night the Surge will be wearing special St. Patrick's Jerseys that will be auctioned after the game.
