
Surf walk to victory over Bears, 2-1

NEWARK, NJ - May 31, 2006 - Atlantic City Surf second baseman Demetrius Heath scored the winning run in the top of the tenth inning when third baseman Joe Jiannetti drew a bases loaded walk to defeat the Newark Bears 2-1 Wednesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The wild top half of the tenth inning included the ejections of Bears Manager Chris Jones and pitcher Joey Cole.
The Surf took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth when Bears shortstop Donaldo Mendez scored to tie the game on an RBI groundout by first baseman Dario Delgado. Mendez led the Bears today going 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base, his 13th of the season.
Silvio Censale (2-1) took the loss after allowing one run in 1 1/3 innings, while Jason DiAngelo (1-0) earned the victory after 2 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out three. Bears starter Joe Gannon allowed one run on five hits in nine innings, and Surf starter Andy High allowed one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. Both starters received no decisions.
Atlantic City was led offensively by right fielder Dusty Maddox going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, and a walk.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 9-18 on the season after losing 10 of the last 11.
The Bears and Surf will play the final game of the three-game series Thursday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
