Suns Blank BayBears in Division Series Opener

Jacksonville, Fla. - Matt Dominguez broke a scoreless deadlock with a solo home run in the eighth inning while Elih Villaneuva finished an out shy of a complete game shutout leading the Jacksonville Suns (1-0) to a 2-0 win over the Mobile BayBears (0-1) in game one of the best-of-five South Division Championship Series in front of a crowd of 2,608 Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Villanueva (1-0) scattered five hits over eight and two-thirds innings with one walk and eight strikeouts in the winning decision. The Southern League All-Star did not allow a BayBears runner past first base until he allowed a two out walk and single in the ninth inning. Sandy Rosario (1) saved the game by inducing a groundout. BayBears reliever Bryan Woodall (0-1) fell in the losing decision after allowing the two eighth inning runs.

The Suns broke the scoreless tie in the eighth inning when Dominguez belted a line drive inside the left field pole for a solo home run, opening a 1-0 lead. Lee Mitchell next singled before pinch runner Kevin Mattison stole second and third base. Ryan Curry next hit a groundball to score Mattison for a 2-0 lead.

Jacksonville had early two out scoring chances turned away by BayBears starter Josh Collmenter.

In the first inning, with two outs and bases empty, Rottino and Dominguez singled before a Mitchell grounder forced out Dominguez to end the inning.

The Suns loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning on singles by Mitchell and Curry and a walk of Tripp. A Chris Hatcher strikeout ended the threat.

In the fifth inning, Ozzie Martinez doubled with two out and, on a Rottino single to centerfield, was thrown out at home for the final out of the inning.

Jacksonville had two on with one out in the seventh inning before a pair of line outs ended the next threat.
