Pittsfield Suns News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA (January 27, 2015) - The Pittsfield Suns have hired Matthew Gedman as Assistant Coach for the 2015 season. Gedman will assist Head Coach Tom Conley with on-field duties this summer.
Gedman, a product of Framingham, Massachusetts, played baseball for the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 2009-2011, before being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2011. The first baseman played four seasons in the Red Sox minor league system, making it as high to the Salem Red Sox (Advanced-A).
"After being lucky enough to play the game I love at a collegiate and professional level, I am very excited to get into coaching and share some of the knowledge I have learned with talented college athletes who have the same passion for the game that I do," Gedman said. "I am looking forward to working in the Pittsfield community and meeting many new people."
A former teammate of Conley's at UMass-Amherst, the head coach is eager to work with someone who shares his vision for success both on and off the field.
"I am excited to add Matt to the Suns coaching staff for the summer of 2015," Conley said. "Matt brings a wealth of knowledge to the game, especially offensively and in the infield."
Gedman's father, Rich Gedman, is a former Red Sox catcher and current hitting coach for the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox. After experiencing professional baseball, players may be able to use Gedman's experience to propel them and the 2015 Suns to the next level.
"The ultimate goal of our players is to one day be drafted and play professional baseball," said Conley. "After spending four years in the Red Sox minor league system, Matt will be able to get our players in a professional routine that prepares them for the grind of playing a game each night in the summer after a full spring season. I am confident Matt will make our team better, and our players will be greatly benefit from what he can offer."
Suns General Manager, Kevin McGuire, is excited to welcome Gedman to the Suns family this summer.
"We are very excited to welcome Matt to our 2015 staff," McGuire said. "Anytime you can add someone like Matt that has been around professional baseball his entire life you instantly make the organization stronger. The unique skill set that Matt brings will not only make our players better on the field, but will also help them understand what it takes to make the next step to a professional baseball career."
The Suns 2015 home opener is scheduled for June 5 at 7PM at Wahconah Park. They begin the season on the road Thurs. June 4th in Torrington, Mass.
