Suns Announce Essay Contest Winners

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Suns are proud to announce the winners for the 1st annual Suns Essay Contest that was held over the past few months with Duval County Public Schools. All Duval County 4th, 8th and 10th grade students were asked to write a 300-500 word essay on their personal hero and a winner would be selected from each school and entered as their respective schools entrant into the countywide contest. One winner for Duval County has been selected from each age group and the winners are:

Christopher Newton a 4th grader from Parkwood Heights Elementary was the winner of the 4th Grade Division for writing his essay on his personal hero, his mom. Christopher will be presented with a $50 Suns Gift Card and a Personalized Suns Jersey.

Our 8th grade winner of the Suns Essay Contest is Hannah Shah from James Weldon Johnson Middle School. Hannah wrote a touching essay on veterans and her appreciation for them. Hannah will receive a Personalized Suns Jersey and a $75 Suns Gift Card.

Mariah Bryant, a student at Englewood High School, was our 10th grade champion for her essay on her heroic Grandfather. For winning the high school category Mariah will receive a $1,000 college scholarship, personalized Suns Jersey and $100 Suns Gift Card.

All three winners will be recognized on Bragan Field before a Suns game during the 2013 season.

Suns Owner and President Peter D. Bragan Jr. has long been an advocate for reading in Duval County Public Schools. Since the late 80's he has personally visited quite a few elementary schools with his Casey's Challenge that encourages students to memorize the famous baseball poem Casey at the Bat for a special prize.
