Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs, an expansion CHL Club slated to begin their Inaugural Season on October 20, have announced three more player signings for 2006-2007. Signees include forward Jeff Doyle, defenseman Mike Looby and netminder Chris King. All players qualify as rookies in the Central Hockey League, having played in fewer than 128 professional games.
Forward Jeff Doyle, 23, played with four teams over a five season period in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before beginning his professional career in 2003. In 98 games as a pro, the 6'1" 206-pound Ontario native has notched 44 points (17g/27a) and 140 penalty minutes.
"Jeff spent several seasons in the OHL, a very competitive junior league in Canada," said Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro. "With our core foundation of veteran players in place, we are now focused on bringing in our younger players. Jeff already has experience in both the United (UHL) and East Coast (ECHL) Hockey Leagues, which will help with his and our other younger players' transition to professional hockey."
Like new teammate Jeff Doyle, defenseman Mike Looby played his junior hockey in the OHL. Over a five-year period from 2001-2006, the 21-year-old totaled 68 points (10g/58a) and 285 penalty minutes in 281 games. Looby's professional experience spans 12 games with the 2005-06 President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks. In those 12 contests the defenseman notched one goal and two assists for three points and two penalty minutes.
Said Pietroniro: "Mike has limited but valuable CHL experience under his belt by appearing in 12 playoff games last season with the Laredo Bucks. Not only did he play in these competitive games, but he produced a goal and two assists which speaks of his ability to produce in our league."
Rookie netminder Chris King comes to the Arizona Sundogs from the CHL's Tulsa Oilers. The 24-year-old King appeared in 28 games with the Oilers in 2005-06, finishing with a 3.36 goals against average (GAA) and a .904 save percentage. Prior to his stint with Tulsa, King played the 2004-05 season with Riessersee SC of the German Oberliga (GerObL), notching two shutouts and a 2.92 GAA.
"Chris is young player with the talent and drive to advance his game far into the future," summarized Pietroniro. "His past season was spent with a member club of the CHL, so he has a knowledge and feel for our league, a luxury that some incoming rookies don't have. We're anxious to see if he can convert that knowledge into an advantage on the ice."
