Arizona Sundogs News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Arizona Sundogs and Corpus Christi Rayz squared off in a Game 7 not decisive on which team moves on but which teams will face one and other in the second round of the CHL Southern Conference Playoffs Wednesday night at the American Bank Center in South Texas. The two teams would skate to a 1-1 tie through regulation and CHL All-Star Brent Kelly would score in overtime to give his club the 2-1 victory, advancing to the second round against the New Mexico Scorpions on Friday, April 13 at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

After two games of allowing Corpus Christi to tally the first goal Arizona would regain its trend of scoring first as Ladislav Kouba would pick up a loose puck in front of the net and turn and fire past Ron Vogel at 15:41 to give his club a 1-0 lead. Chris Bartolone and Dan Laperriere would collect assists on the play. Arizona's first tally would also come on the power play where the Sundogs were unable to convert on their last 11 chances. The Rayz would answer back with just 1:46 to play in the opening period as Matt Turek would notch his club's first of the game on passes from Kevin Watters and Steve Pelletier.

The Sundogs and Rayz would skate in a scoreless second period but both squads would see scoring chances throughout the set. Central Hockey League Playoff co-leading goal scorer Brent Kelly would ring a puck off the far post midway through the frame. Through the first two periods Arizona would have a 14-12 shot advantage over Corpus Christi.

Much like the second period, both clubs would skate to a stalemate in the third with neither able to break the 1-1 tie. Both goaltenders made key saves throughout the frame and had some help from bouncing pucks. Kelly would again have a golden opportunity to give Arizona a one-goal lead out-maneuvering Vogel but an on-edge puck would jump over the blade of Kelly's stick and slide into the corner. The Sundogs would continue to hold an advantage in shots by a mark of 23-22 through regulation.

At 13:46 of overtime Cory Stillman would gain possession of the puck in the corner and slide it to an open Kelly inside the face off circle. Kelly would snipe the puck over the right shoulder of Vogel to secure the 2-1 Game 7 win.

Mike Wall would block 34 of 35 shots faced in the 2-1 win while Ron Vogel would block all but two of the 30 shots in the loss. Both teams would see seven power plays but Arizona would be the only team to take advantage converting on one chance. Corpus Christi would outshoot the Sundogs for the first time in the series by a mark of 35-30.

The Sundogs now travel to Rio Rancho, New Mexico for their second round match-up against the New Mexico Scorpions. The semi-final series begins Friday, April 13 at 6:05pm Arizona time but will be tape delayed until 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
