Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Friday, March 6, 2015) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers pieced together their strongest performance of the preseason, topping Florida International University 3-0 Friday night at Lockhart Stadium.
Aly Alberto Hassan led the scoring for the Strikers, netting a pair of first-half goals, before Dani Sánchez completed the scoring in the second half.
"The effort was great," said Strikers Head Coach Marcelo Neveleff. "We played well and did a lot of things right. We had three or four chances, and scored on three of them. Still, we have a lot to work on."
Hassan's first goal came in the 5th minute on a volley from the center of the box. Trialist right back Anthony Ricci provided the cross for the Weston native to power the ball past the goalkeeper for the game's first goal.
The forward's second goal came on a penalty kick 20 minutes later after a Panthers' defender took down Strikers left back PC in the 18-yard box. Hassan sent the FIU goalkeeper the wrong way as he slotted the ball into the lower left corner to double the Strikers advantage. Halftime substitute Sánchez made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute, when he controlled a lofted pass from Ricci at the top of the 18-yard box, and sent a side-footed effort into the right corner of the net.
Fort Lauderdale goalkeepers David Meves and Joe Nasco combined for the shutout.
Earlier in the afternoon a Strikers XI composed entirely of trialists and training camp invitees took on USL Premier Development side Floridians FC. The side fell 1-0 in the 70-minute scrimmage.
