Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers (4W-4T-5L) fell to the Minnesota Stars (5W-5T-2L) 2-1 on the road at NSC Stadium. Mark Anderson scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year on a free kick in the first half. The Stars scored both their goals in the first half on a penalty kick from Neil Hlavaty and a header from Simone Bracalello. The Strikers fall to sixth place in the NASL standings before facing the Carolina RailHawks at Lockhart Stadium next Saturday, June 30th.

The game was very fast-paced with both sides earning chances throughout the match. The Stars' first goal came after a string of passes led to Simone Bracalello taking a shot inside the penalty area which struck the extended hand of defender Jack Stewart. Neil Hlavaty took the penalty kick and struck it toward the center-left and high into the goal beating Matt Glaeser.

The Strikers would equalize nine minutes later in the 26th minute when Mark Anderson took a free kick from nearly 30 yards away from goal. His shot went low into the right-hand corner of the net beating the Stars goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel.

Then the Strikers were again victimized late in the first half, similar to the last meeting between these teams, when defender Brian Kallman found himself alone in the corner and sent a cross toward goal. Bracalello streaked in front of Glaeser and dove to get his head on the cross and into the back of the net.

The second half saw Strikers' forward Andy Herron subbed off due to an apparent injury, though he walked off the field under his own power. There were several half chances for the Strikers, but none to really test Van Oekel and the Stars' defense.

The Strikers will return home to face the Carolina RailHawks on Saturday, June 30, at Lockhart Stadium at 7:30p.m.
