Albany Dutchmen News Release
The Albany Dutchmen (13-14) continued their winning streak at Bob Bellizzi Field on Wednesday night against the Elmira Pioneers (14-14) with a 5-2 victory. Albany has now won five straight as they continue to close the gap for second place in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League East Division.
The Dutchmen drew first blood in the PCGBL interleague contest and never looked back. After completing a double steal, both Dain McNabb (Middle Tennessee State) and Nikko Echevarria (Nova Southeastern) were driven home to give Albany a 2-0 lead in the first.
The offensive surge for the Dutchmen continued as Ryan Van Amburgh (Pepperdine) hit an RBI double in the third and Echevarria advanced home on a Pioneer throwing error in the fourth to put the Dutchmen ahead comfortably at 4-0.
Damon Valloreo (2-0)(Burlington County CC) went 5.1 innings, fanning three on four hits and two earned runs for the Dutchmen. He recorded the win in his first start of the season.
Valloreo looked strong all night, but ran into trouble in the sixth. After loading the bases, the Albany lefty's night came to end with a two-run RBI single by Pioneer DH Cory Keller (Florida Atlantic). Reliever C.J. Sohl (Siena) stopped the bleeding allowing no addition runs to cross the plate while leaving the bases loaded.
The Dutchmen added a run in the bottom of the sixth to close things out at 5-2. Sohl dominated in relief for Albany pitching 3.2 innings of shutout ball and recording the save. Starter Aaron Zaleznik (1-1) (Massachusetts) was tagged with the loss for Elmira.
Albany will take on the Cooperstown Hawkeyes on road starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow night. They will be back at Bob Bellizzi Field on Friday evening to take on the Watertown Wizards. Elmira will be in Amsterdam tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
