Lancaster Stormers News Release

Sunday afternoon nearly turned into another shocker for the Lancaster Stormers.

Staten Island rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth before Billy Sullivan picked up the final two outs as Lancaster prevailed, 11-10.

It was the 12th win in 13 games for the Stormers.

Lenny Torres retired Isaiah Mirabal on a tapper back to the mound to start the ninth inning. He walked Johnni Turbo on a full count pitch to put one runner aboard. Luis Garcia snuck a double over the first base bag, and Blake Rutherford walked to load the bases. Former Minnesota Twin Kennys Vargas drove a fly ball to deep left that eluded David Smith's leaping try at the wall, scoring two.

Sullivan took over and yielded a sacrifice fly to Gary Mattis before retiring pinch hitter Matt Hogan for the final out. The right-hander earned his fourth save.

At one point, Staten Island appeared to have the upper hand as Brandon Wagner cracked a three-run double to the gap in left center in the bottom of the fifth inning to stake the hosts to a 7-4 lead.

That lead did not last long as the Stormers surged back in the sixth inning. Joseph Carpenter opened the inning with his second home run of the afternoon. Adam Hackenberg chimed in with a single off starter Juan Fernandez. One out later, Kevin Dowdell (0-3) replaced Fernandez. The lefty walked both Scott Kelly and Corey Rosier to load the bases. Aaron Schunk ripped his seventh double of the series down the third base line for an 8-7 Lancaster lead. Schunk then scored on Nathan Martorella's double into the right field corner.

Smith and Kelly added RBI singles in the late innings for much needed insurance.

Richie Dell (2-0) threw 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the win. JT Weaver picked up his first hold with a perfect eighth.

The Stormers head home to face the Long Island Ducks Tuesday at 6:45. Matt Swarmer (2-5) will take the hill against Long Island right-hander Michael Dominguez (5-3). Fans may follow the action on Dugout TV, powered by HomeTeam Network, starting at 6:35.

NOTES: Martorella finished the series with four RBI...The Stormers scored 64 runs on 82 hits in the series...Rosier has a hit in eight straight games and a walk in 10 straight...He has scored at least one run in each of the last seven...Tristin English returned to action for the first time since Tuesday and singled in a pair of runs in the top of the fifth...He has 36 RBI in 26 games.
