Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Storm re-signed four players, wide receivers Hank Edwards, Sedrick Robinson and Tyrone Timmons as well as defensive back Byron Jones, announced Head Coach and General Manager Tim Marcum.
"This is a positive step for the future of this team," said Marcum. "We extended the contract of two very promising young receivers, brought back a healthy and exciting return man and added depth to our defensive backfield."
Edwards, (6-foot-3, 185-pounds, Texas Southern) re-signed through the 2010 season. After playing sparingly his rookie season (2007), Edwards had a break out year in 2008. He led the team with 1,348 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns on 85 receptions despite missing two games to a foot injury. He finished the season with a 15.9 yards per catch average, second in the Arena Football League and had two five-touchdown games along with a 188 yard performance against the New Orleans VooDoo in Week 3.
Robinson, (5-10, 185, Kentucky Wesleyan) overcame early season injuries to lead the team with 1,199 kickoff return yards, sixth most in the AFL and became the first player in AFL history to surpass 10,000 kickoff return yards. A multi-dimensional threat he led the Storm with 1,675 all-purpose yards as he contributed to the ground and air game.
Timmons, (6-4, 220, Mississippi Valley State) played in the final four games of his rookie season. He began the season on injured reserve and made his way to the active roster after injuries to Edwards and Terrill Shaw. Timmons proved to be an effective weapon in the redzone as he finished with 23 receptions for 267 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is signed through 2010.
Jones (5-11, 200-pounds, Texas A&M) saw action in four games as he completed his second season with the Storm. He finished the season with 14.5 tackles and recorded two pass breakups and one forced fumble. Jones signed a two-year deal.
The Tampa Bay Storm look forward to next season with many key players from 2008 returning. All-Arena defensive lineman Tim McGill, quarterback Brett Dietz, wide receivers Hank Edwards and Tyrone Timmons among others will be back to take the 2009 AFL season by storm.
