HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Chicago Storm were shut out by the Baltimore Blast, 13-0, in Major Indoor Soccer League action Saturday at the Sears Centre Arena. Chicago was blanked for the first time since Feb. 4, 2006, when the Storm fell to St. Louis, 4-0.
Baltimore's shutout is the first in the organization's history. Blast goalkeeper Sagu made 11 saves. On the flip side, Jeff Richey made six saves for Chicago (14-13). The Blast improved their record to 17-9 and 3-0 against the Storm this season.
Next up for the Storm is their regular-season home finale at 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, against the California Cougars. Sears Centre doors open at 6 p.m. Chicago's regular season goes to the road afterward, with matches March 29 against host Baltimore and April 5 against Orlando.
The Storm still are fighting for a playoff spot. So far, three teams have clinched an MISL postseason berth: Detroit, Milwaukee and Baltimore.
On Saturday, Baltimore's Mike Lookingland and Machel Millwood each scored two goals. One of Lookingland's goals was a three-pointer.
Lucio Gonzaga and Millwood gave Baltimore a 4-0 lead through the first quarter. Lookingland scored both of his goals in the third quarter as the Blast took a 9-0 lead into halftime. Millwood and Denison Cabral scored third-quarter goals for a 13-0 lead. The Storm and Blast played to a scoreless fourth quarter.
Stephen Armstrong returned to the Storm lineup after missing several matches because of an ankle injury. He led the team with four shots against Baltimore. Storm forward and former Baltimore player Carlos "Chile" Farias missed Saturday's match, serving a one-game suspension after receiving two yellow cards against New Jersey the previous week. He returns for Friday's match against California. Randy Soderman also will return for the Storm's final three regular-season matches, Storm head coach Steve Morris said following Saturday's game.
