January 26, 2008 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Chicago Storm News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The first-place Chicago Storm (11-5) travel to Milwaukee to face the Wave (11-6) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Both teams flip-flopped spots in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings Friday. The Wave lost their MISL lead after falling to Baltimore, 12-7, while the Storm topped Detroit, 9-2, to earn a share of the league lead with the Ignition.
Chicago is 2-1 against the Wave this season and 12-11 overall. After Sunday's match, the Storm's developmental team, Tormenta de Chicago, faces the Wave's developmental squad, Milwaukee Armada.
STORM UPDATE - Points leaders: Two Storm players rank in the MISL's top 20 in points. Matthew Stewart, who is tied for 10th with 35 points, posted four points (two two-point goals) Friday. He has scored a goal in five straight matches (eight goals in that stretch). Carlos "Chile" Farias is 16th with 33 points. Farias had two assists Friday to up his total to nine. He has nine two-point goals and two three-pointers this season.
- Boom Shakalaka: Storm public address announcer Nick Mitrovich came up with a new tag Friday: Stephen "Boom Shakalaka" Armstrong. It's pretty appropriate, considering Armstrong is tied with Monterrey's Dino Delevski for the league lead in three-point goals. With Friday's three-point tally with 29 seconds remaining against Detroit, Armstrong now has six goals from beyond the arc. Overall, Armstrong is tied for third on the Storm with 28 points in 14 matches.
- Bad news, good news: The Storm learned Wednesday that second-year defenseman Will Kletzien will miss the remainder of the 2007-08 season with a torn ACL. Kletzien played in 15 games and blocked 16 shots this season. The defense received reinforcement with the return of Randy Soderman, who missed several matches because of the birth of a baby girl. Soderman scored a goal against Detroit on Friday. Also, this week the Storm signed Argentinean defender Gabriel Cigliano. Cigliano, who made his MISL debut Friday, spent two years with Argentina's national futsal team.
- Last time against Milwaukee: On Dec. 15, 2007, the Storm saw their four-game losing streak end as Milwaukee topped Chicago, 9-6, at the Sears Centre. Storm goalie Jeff Richey's streak of 16 straight regular-season victories also ended. Greg Howes and Giuliano Oliviero each scored two goals for Milwaukee.
WAVE UPDATE - Howes about that! Milwaukee forward Greg Howes is running away with the MISL points lead. Through 16 matches, Howes has 26 two-point goals, two three-pointers and 11 assists for a whopping 69 points. He was held pointless against Baltimore on Friday, but in three previous matches Howes piled up a staggering 23 points.
- Home sweet home: Milwaukee returns to the U.S. Cellular Arena after posting a 3-2 road record in its past five matches. Eight of Milwaukee's remaining 13 regular-season games are in the Brew City.
