Chicago Storm News Release
NEWARK, N.J. - Despite a three-goal effort from Carlos "Chile" Farias, the Storm fell to the New Jersey Ironmen, 10-9, in Major Indoor Soccer League play Saturday at the Prudential Center. Tiguinho's fourth-quarter goal was the game-winner as New Jersey (13-12) delayed Chicago's hopes of clinching a playoff berth. The Storm (14-12) need one victory to earn a spot in the MISL postseason.
Next up for the Storm is a 7 p.m. match Saturday, March 22, against the Baltimore Blast at the Sears Centre Arena. Following the match is the season finale of the Storm's and Q101's concert and a game series, brought to you by Comcast. This season's final act is Sister Hazel.
The Ironmen opened Saturday's match with two goals in the first 3 minutes. Geison netted a two-point goal at the 1:40 mark off of a John Kraus assist. Then former Storm defender Lazo Alavanja added to New Jersey's lead with a two-point goal at the 2:54 mark for a 4-0 advantage.
With 29.7 seconds remaining, Farias tallied a big three-point goal to cut the Ironmen's lead to 4-3 heading into halftime. The goal was Farias' first since a two-goal effort against California on Jan. 5.
The Storm carried the momentum into the second half when Farias scored a two-point goal 40 seconds into the third quarter to take a 5-4 lead. The match turned into a seesaw battle for the remainder of the match.
Nebojsa Stemankovic gave New Jersey a 6-5 lead at the 3:08 mark. Farias came right back with his third goal of the match, a two-pointer at the 4:59 mark, to give the Storm a 7-6 lead. The Ironmen's Daniel Antoniuk pushed New Jersey up in front, 8-7, at the 9:35 mark. With 45 seconds left in the quarter, Mariano Bollella gave the Storm a 9-8 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Tiguinho gave New Jersey the upper hand with a two-point goal at the 5:20 mark for a 10-9 advantage. The Ironmen defense clamped down on the Storm the rest of the way.
Storm goalkeeper Jeff Richey made 13 saves, and defender John Ball made two in the fourth quarter when he was used a sixth attacker late in the fourth quarter. New Jersey goalkeeper Tony Meola made 19 saves.
