Great Lakes Storm News Release
Birch Run, MI (March 3, 2003)âFast breaks and back door shots kept the Storm from catching the Gary Steelheads in the end. James Head led the Storm with 28 points and 12 rebounds in the 117-105 defeat, reeling in only one quarter point out of seven. Cam Stephens threw in 23 points.
"We played very well in the first quarter offensively and defensively," says head coach Jeff Grayer. But in the second quarter and even the second half we seemed to get away from playing defensively. We allowed the Steelheads to many second chance shots which cost us the game."
Silas Mills led the Steelheads in the final assault with 22 points. Four Steelheads scored at least 20 points.
Before their largest crowd of the season, 2,310, the Storm (19-28) just couldn't break their home game losing streak. The Storm had won only eight games at home this season. Ironically, the Storm won their first home game 110-101 against the Steelheads.
Tonight was also Coca-Cola's Fan Appreciation night. Anyone who brought in a carbonated Coca-Cola product can or bottle could get $2 off his or her ticket purchase and have a chance to win a Powerade mountain bike.
"We wanted to show our fans how much we appreciated their support throughout the season," Grayer comments. We were able to show our appreciation by playing hard and being able to sign autographs after game. Unfortunately, we were unable to give them a win."
DeSean Hadley and James Head were awarded the Coca-Cola MVP award for the Great Lakes Storm. Both DeSean and James played in all 47 games this season. James also played in the CBA All-Star game in January.
In Storm transactions, Kevin Melson from Wright State, and Rob Dye from Bradley were added to the roster today. Duke University's Ricky Price was waived due to an achilles injury.
The Storm's last game of the season will be this Saturday, March 8th in Rockford, Illinois.
