Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA BAY - Tampa Sports and Entertainment LLC, chief executive officer Tod Leiweke announced today that Dave Ewart is the new head coach for the Tampa Bay Storm. Ewart replaces Tim Marcum, who stepped down this morning after 15 seasons with the club as head coach and general manager. Ewart had served the previous seven seasons as assistant coach and director of player personnel. The upcoming season marks Ewart's 16th season in the Arena Football League (AFL) and his fifth as a head coach in the AFL.
"We are excited that Dave Ewart has accepted the position of head coach for the Tampa Bay Storm," said Leiweke upon making the announcement. "We believe Dave will do the job admirably and we intend on fully supporting him and our players. We also intend on commencing a search aimed at recasting the leadership of the franchise; one that will be committed to carrying on the championship tradition here, while establishing itself as a leader in Tampa Bay community."
Ewart, 41, played college football at Salem (West Virginia) College and East Tennessee State (ETSU), where he was named to the Division I-AA All-America team as an offensive lineman. He began his coaching career at ETSU in 1991 and eventually moved to the Arena Football League in 1994 as an assistant for the Cleveland Thunderbolts. He has served as a head coach for the St. Louis Stampede (1996), the Texas Terror (1997) and the Florida Bobcats (2000, '01). He has served as assistant coach and director of player personnel for the Storm since 2002.
"I appreciate the opportunity presented to me today by our management and look forward to giving the team, our players and fans 110 percent as we start training camp and subsequently, our season, in the coming weeks," said Ewart. "We will field a strong, competitive team this year and give our great fans an exciting product to support."
The Storm open training camp Saturday, February 19, holding its first practice at Skyway Park (3901 George Road) in Tampa from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The team will play two preseason games, first in Jacksonville against the Sharks on Monday, February 28 at 7:00 PM and then at home (St. Pete Times Forum) against the Orlando Predators on Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 PM.
The Storm's regular season opener is scheduled for March 11, 2010 at 8:00 PM in New Orleans against the VooDoo.
