Island Storm News Release
(Charlottetown, PE) The Island STORM started the season on a high note with a home opening win over the Saint John Mill Rats in front of almost 2,400 fans November 6th at Eastlink Centre. But now, more than halfway through a 7 game road trip, the STORM have fallen to 1-4 and changes have been announced by Head Coach Joe Salerno. While the STORM are 3rd best in the league in team defense, the offense has struggled shooting only 25% from the 3 point line and 70% from the foul line (both last in the NBL Canada) and is 2nd last in turnovers.
The STORM has released Myron Strong and Renardo Sidney and has resigned forward Louis Birdsong and former STORM point guard Avery Smith.
After spending last year helping BG Aschersleben of Germany to their best finish in 6 years, Louis Birdsong is back in the fold with the Island STORM of the NBL Canada. The 6'7" forward out of George Mason University came to camp this year but was caught in the numbers game and was cut before the season started. Birdsong is a hard worker, a character guy, and a great teammate which will be a big help to the STORM has they look to turn things around.
Meanwhile, Avery Smith comes back to the STORM after playing with the team during the 2012-13 season. The 6'3" point guard from Milwaukee is an instant offence type of player. At the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Smith scored 10.5 points per game with 4 rebounds and over 2 assists in 91 games. He was also named the Horizon League Player of the Week during his career. With the STORM in 2012-13 Smith averaged over 9 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game as a backup point guard.
The Island STORM wishes both Renardo Sidney and Myron Strong all the best in their future endeavors.
The STORM continues on the road Wednesday as they play the Miracles in Moncton at 7pm. Two more games are on the road schedule before the STORM get back on home court Sunday November 30th at 2pm at Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.
STORM season tickets are still on sale at the Eastlink Centre Box Office and anyone who purchased a single game ticket for the home opener can use the cost of that ticket toward the purchase of a season ticket for the final home games.
The STORM also has a merchandise corner at Sherwood BMR on Mount Edward Road in Charlottetown with a great selection of STORM Gear. Fans may purchase STORM Gear at Sherwood BMR to get ready for the next home game or for Christmas gift buying"â¹
