Great Lakes Storm News Release
Birch Run, MI (February 9, 2005) â The Great Lakes Storm lost a tough one tonight against the Dakota Wizards 107-104 (5.0, 2.0) to move to 21-14 on the season. The battle of the top two teams in the CBA was as good as advertised; unfortunately, the Storm came out on the losing end. Dakota remains in first place in the West as they improved to 22-12 on the season.
With Trevor Huffman going on the injured list and Mark Jones lost to illness, the Storm had to overcome a lot to post a win against the defending CBA Champions. The Wizards came out on fire in the first quarter as they shot a blistering 86.7% (13-for-15) from the field to win the quarter 38-29. It was much of the same in the second quarter as the Wizards shot 61.5% (24-for-39) in the first half to take a 62-54 lead into halftime. However, the Storm would win the quarter 25-24 behind 17 first half-points from Jackie Butler. The Storm trailed most of the third quarter, several times by double digits. They would battle back though and tied the game up at 85-85 to set up the fantastic finish. The Storm won the third quarter 31-23. Both teams traded baskets in the fourth with neither team taking control of the game. The Storm went up by four on a Jermaine Jackson field goal with under two minutes remaining in the game. Maurice Baker quickly answered back with a lay-up seven seconds later to trim the lead to two. Chris Porter made two free throws with :52 in the game as the Wizards took their first lead of the final quarter, 105-104. Kasib Powell would go to the line for two shots with :36 on the clock and a chance to regain the lead. He missed both and Maurice Baker made two free throws to increase the lead to 107-104. That would be the final score as Kasib Powell missed a contested three-point shot with :06 left in the game.
The Storm's next game is on Friday, February 11th at home against the Idaho Stampede. Tip-off is set for 7:05 at the Birch Run Expo Center.
