Storm Host Ironmen Before Road Trip

January 3, 2009 - Xtreme Soccer League (XSL)
Chicago Storm News Release

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (Jan. 3, 2009) - The Chicago Storm are in search of their second Xtreme Soccer League victory against New Jersey when they host the Ironmen at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at the Sears Centre Arena. Doors open at noon. The Storm's home match also is a Military Appreciation Day. Chicago (2-2) then hits the road for the next four games, including a match on Friday, Jan. 9, at New Jersey (0-2).

Earlier this 2008-2009 season, Chicago topped New Jersey, 4-2, on Dec. 14, 2008, in Newark, N.J. Jeff Richey and the Storm defense held the Ironmen scoreless in the second half, while Awadalla Morad notched his first of two game-winning goals this season.

Chicago is coming off a 14-10 loss to the Milwaukee Wave on New Year's Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 31. The Storm's only two losses of the 2008-2009 season are against first-place Milwaukee.

"We'd like to get back on a winning track," Storm head coach Steve Morris said. "We played a tough game on New Year's Eve against Milwaukee, a very close game, and it could have gone either way. We look forward to playing at home on Sunday. We also realize that we're playing a team that's hungry to get a win. New Jersey is a strong, veteran team that is well-coached, so we're going to have our hands full."

Chicago is shorthanded for Sunday's game, however. Stephen Armstrong, who had two goals and an assist against Milwaukee, also was issued a red card in the fourth quarter, so he has to sit this match out. Storm defender Chris Brisson also is out because of a knee injury.

On the flip side, New Jersey has had the past two weeks off. Frederico Moojen is questionable with a toe injury, but the rest of the Ironmen lineup is healthy. The Ironmen are, however, still searching for their first XSL victory and are in the midst of a 10-game road losing streak.

Chicago's key contributors of late have been Chris Cerroni, who leads the Storm with four goals and nine points, and goalkeeper Richey, who has 45 saves in four games, including a 19-save effort against the Wave on Wednesday. The 19 saves ties a career high and ties for third all-time in Storm history for a single-game performance. (Richey originally was credited with 20 saves, but one save incorrectly was awarded. Sixth attacker Lazo Alavanja should have received the save with 1:42 remaining in the fourth quarter.)

The Chicago Storm organization is playing its fifth season of professional indoor soccer. Chicago's next Xtreme Soccer League match takes place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at the Sears Centre Arena. Storm offices are located at 5333 Prairie Stone Pkwy., in Hoffman Estates.
