Tampa Bay Storm News Release
Tampa Bay -The Tampa Bay Storm (6-9) fell to the New Orleans VooDoo (3-12) 64-33 in front of 12,016 fans at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, FL. on Friday night.
Tampa Bay quarterback Brian Zbydniewski got off to a fast start in the first half, going 10-of-13 passing for 133 yards and four touchdowns. His play led the Storm to a 25-24 advantage late in the second quarter.
However the wheels came off at the end of the first half, as VooDoo back-up quarterback and place-kick holder Danny Wimprine successfully converted a fake field goal attempt into a three-yard touchdown rush as time expired, giving New Orleans a six-point advantage heading into the second half.
After a Damon Mason interception on the Storm's first possession of the second half, VooDoo receiver PJ Berry scored from two yards out, extending New Orleans lead to 13, a lead the Storm were unable to curtail. Penalties frustrated the Storm throughout the night, on both sides of the ball, as the team committed 13 miscues resulting in 91 yards of penalty yardage as several occurred at inopportune times.
Storm receiver Amarri Jackson continued his outstanding play, grabbing 11 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson, who has a touchdown in each of his last 12 games, is now one reception shy of Freddie Solomon's franchise record (105) for receptions in a rookie season with 104.
Another record in sight for the Storm over these last three weeks will be the AFL single-season team record for sacks. Tim McGill's eighth sack of the season, which came at the expense of New Orleans quarterback D. Bryant in the second quarter, brought the team's total to 35, just three shy of the 1988 Pittsburgh Gladiators total of 38.
Bryant, voted the offensive player of the game, was 24-of-43 passing, for 215 yards and five touchdowns. Bryant added another score on a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, giving the VooDoo signal caller a total of six scores on the night.
The Storm is now 6-4 all-time against the division rival VooDoo.
The Storm head out to the American Heartland to take on the Tulsa Talons next Saturday, July 9th, at 8PM EST. Storm fans can tune into 1250 AM-WHNZ starting at 7:30 PM for all of the Storm Radio Network's coverage, or NiftyTV.com's AFL Player to watch the game online.
