Chicago Storm News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (Jan. 4, 2009) - Chicago Storm defender Fabinho netted two goals, but they were not enough as Chicago fell to the New Jersey Ironmen, 13-7, on Sunday in Xtreme Soccer League play at the Sears Centre Arena. The Storm (2-3) drop their second straight, while the Ironmen (1-2) pick up their first XSL win and end a 10-game road losing streak dating back to 2007-2008.
Next up for the Storm is a 6:30 p.m. (CST) road match on Friday, Jan. 9, against New Jersey at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. This is the start of a four-game road trip for the Storm. Their next home match is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, against the Ironmen at the Sears Centre Arena.
The Storm played Sunday's game shorthanded, with Stephen Armstrong serving a red card from the Dec. 31 game against Milwaukee, and Chris Brisson out because of a knee injury. But Chicago kept itself in the game against the Ironmen. Chicago even held a 5-2 advantage in the second quarter, before New Jersey outscored the Storm, 8-0, as both teams headed into halftime.
Fabinho scored his second and third goals of the season, a three-pointer in the second quarter and a two-pointer in the third to cut New Jersey's lead to 10-7. Fabinho's three-pointer is the first for the Storm in this inaugural XSL season. Branko Savic contributed his first goal of the season on the power play at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter.
In the net, the Storm's Jeff Richey saved 11 of 16 shots and allowed 10 of New Jersey's 13 points. On the flip side, New Jersey's Brett Phillips saved 15 of 18 shots. Frederico Moojen had two goals and Rey Martinez had the game-winner to give New Jersey an 8-5 lead in the second quarter.
With 9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, former Storm forward Carlos "Chile" Farias was issued a yellow card for protesting a penalty, then was issued a red card for foul language.
Other Storm bits: Midfielder Andy Rosenband wore his No. 15 shorts but had to wear a No. 25 jersey because his other top was nowhere to be found. ... Vladimir Knezevic notched his first XSL point on an assist to Fabinho in the second quarter. ... The Storm and Ironmen each had 11 blocks. Ryan Hall had four for New Jersey, and the Storm's Savic had three to go along with his power play goal in the second quarter.
