Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

TAMPA -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs knew that C.J. Riefenhauser was more that capable of jumping into the starting rotation at any time, but Friday's outing may have made a case for the lefty to stay in the rotation.

Riefenhauser (6-0) dominated the Tampa Yankees over six scoreless innings of work to help the Charlotte Stone Crabs grab a 2-0 win on Friday at George M. Steinbrenner Field. With that start, Riefenhauser lowered his Florida State League best ERA down to 0.70 on the year.

Making just his second start, Reifenhauser used 82 pitches - 57 strikes - to plow through the Tampa order. He recorded season-high nine strikeouts to push his way into a tie for second in the league with team-best 50 punch-outs.

Charlotte scored a first inning run against Nik Turley (2-2) thanks in large part to wildness from the Yankees starter. Hector Guevara doubled to leadoff the game and reached third base on a ground out and then came in to score on a wild pitch to give Charlotte the 1-0 lead.

Brandon Allen, in his second game of a Major League rehab assignment, belted a towering solo home run in the top of the third inning to make a 2-0 game. It was Allen's lone hit, but proved to be a big one for the Charlotte designated hitter. Allen is scheduled to start in left field for the Stone Crabs on Saturday.

Riefenhauser's effort may have garnered the most attention, but Victor Mateo was equally important in shutting down the Yankees offense. Mateo earned his first save of the season with three perfect innings out of the bullpen. The two Charlotte hurlers combined for 12 strikeouts on the night.

Other notable nights offensively for Charlotte included catcher Keith Castillo, who finished 3-for-4. Hector Guevara had two hits and a run scored out of the lead-off spot.

The series continues on Saturday as lefty Grayson Garvin will take the mound for the Stone Crabs against fellow southpaw Matt Tracy. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
