Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- The fourth inning kept all the excitement for itself Tuesday night, as a five-spot in the top half by the Palm Beach Cardinals was answered by eight runs in the bottom half by the Charlotte Stone Crabs, and the Stone Crabs held on for an 8-6 victory at Charlotte Sports Park.
A three-run home run by Luke Bailey plated the first three Charlotte in the bottom of the fourth inning, and a 2-run single by Robby Price added another pair as the Stone Crabs brought 13 men to the plate in the frame.
It all started when Derek Dietrich was hit by a pitch from Cardinals starter Anthony Ferrara (4-5), followed by a walk to Riccio Torrez. Two batters later Bailey deposited a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall to begin the comeback.
The next batter Cody Rogers was hit by a pitch, Hector Guevara singled two batters later. Price then grounded sharply up the middle, and the ball went through the legs of both Palm Beach middle infielders for two more runs.
The inning continued as Mikie Mahtook grounded to second baseman Tyler Rahmatulla, who booted the baseball, allowing Mahtook to reach. Dietrich singled home Price for the sixth run of the frame, and Riccio Torrez reached on an error by third baseman Jonathan Rodriguez scoring Mahtook. Phil Wunderlich got the final say in the frame, singling home Dietrich, who scored for the second time in the inning.
All this was in response of five runs in the top of the fourth, mostly thanks to a two-run shot by Rodriguez off Stone Crabs starter Albert Suarez, as well as a two-run single by Mike O'Neill.
Hector Guevara led the Stone Crabs throughout the night with three hits. Jimmy Patterson (5-3) got the win in relief and Chris Rearick grabbed a four-out save, his 14th of the season in 16 tries.
With the series tied at one game each, Charlotte will look for the victory Wednesday, as they hand the ball to righty Victor Mateo (0-2). He will match up against Cardinal right-hander Todd McInnis (0-3). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
