Stone Crabs Get by Clearwater 2-1

PORT CHARLOTTE -- On a night when runs were hard to come by, the Charlotte Stone Crabs edged the Clearwater Threshers to take the opening game of a four-game series by a score of 2-1 on Thursday.

Two runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Robby Price and Derek Dietrich were all Enny Romero (4-4) and the Charlotte bullpen would need.

Both teams sprayed 16 hits across Charlotte Sports Park in the contest, but the two staffs were able to strand a total of 17 base runners.

Clearwater struck first in the top of the fourth against Romero. Anthony Hewitt picked up the first hit of the day for the Threshers and stole second. After a walk to Jeremy Barnes, Harold Martinez singled in Hewitt to put Clearwater up 1-0.

The Stone Crabs did not take long to find an answer, staging their first and only rally against Threshers starter Brody Colvin (5-5) in the fifth.

Luke Bailey hustled for a lead-off double, and was sacrificed to third by Kevin Kiermaier. Charlotte knotted the game on Price's run-scoring single. Two batters later, Dietrich drove home Price to put the Stone Crabs ahead for good.

Clearwater threatened to even up the game in the seventh against reliever Lenny Linsky. With Edgar Duran on second base representing the tying run, Zach Collier singled up the middle. Duran rounded third and headed for home, but Kiermaier came up throwing from center to nail Duran at the plate and preserve the 2-1 lead.

The bullpen continued to hold, with Linsky and T.J. Geith combining for three scoreless innings, before Chris Rearick slammed the door shut with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth for save number 20 of the year.

The Stone Crabs send righty Victor Mateo to the mound Friday. The Threshers will counter with right-hander Perci Garner. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Charlotte Sports Park.
